I'm not sure what I want to achieve so would coaching work for me?

coaching Apr 05, 2022

Video transcript:

So you may be thinking about coaching
and one of the things in your mind
that you might have is actually I’m not
sure what I want or where I want to go
and so if I’ve got nothing particular to focus on
how on earth is coaching going to work for me?
Personally, from a coaching point of view
that’s a fantastic place to be.
In a situation where actually your client has
no idea where they want to go
what they want to do because you can
very quickly make straightforward progress.
So what a good coach will do is they will
tend to do is help you focus on your values
and what’s important to you
in life in general.
And then once you’ve established that help you
to focus on a direction that honours those values
which will actually make sense to you.
So as you move towards a particular goal
you feel like you’re becoming more of yourself
and more of an expression of yourself.
So it’s absolutely fine to have no particular goal
to aim for in coaching and...

Is my coaching confidential?

coaching Apr 05, 2022

Video transcript:

Is my coaching confidential?
Well I don’t just mean my coaching but
coaching in general.
Now from a legal point of view coaching
is not confidential. It’s not one of those
prescribed professions that you can have a
legal client relationship with where
you can hold things confidential.
If your client mentions some kind of
illegal practice or some kind of crime
they committed within a coaching session
and a policeman asks you about it
in the very unlikely case that happens then
you can’t say I’ve got client confidentiality
and I can’t tell you.
Now, that being said
there are issues of confidentiality.
In general your coaching sessions
are confidential accept for that
legal limitation you might have.
And in a working situation
so as an external coach going into an
organisation I make it very clear with
my direct clients boss or organisation
that everything I talk about with my
coaching client in conversation is
confidential and I will not tell anybody
outside of...

Do all coaches use the GROW Model?

coaching grow model Apr 05, 2022

Video transcript:

So my previous Field Note I mentioned
what the GROW model is and where it
comes from and how you can
find out more information.
The next obvious questions is
Do all coaches use the GROW model?
The answer to that is no.
The GROW model is a fantastic
task-focused tool you can use in many
work situations and in personal situations too
but it has some limitations to it.
So if you’re dealing with somebody or
coaching with things like values, beliefs
things about identity, you know, who a person is
where they’re going in life generally
the GROW model tends to run out of steam
pretty quickly and there’s a whole range
of other models and tools you might use.
So do all coaches use the GROW model?
All coaches tend to be very familiar with it
because it’s a nice simple process.
You can teach your clients it fairly
quickly if they’re interested in coaching
but no it’s not a model used by all coaches.

What is the GROW Model?

coaching grow model Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

So what is the GROW model of coaching?
The reasons I’ve created a Field Note out
of this is in the many workshops I ran last year
in the period of non-Covid I often asked the
question of engineers and people I was working
with if they had heard of the GROW model of coaching
and I was surprised to find that typically
only about 10% had heard of it.
So just a very quick word about the GROW model
and how you can find out more.
It’s one of the most basic and simple models of
coaching, often taught on many coaching courses
and it’s something that can take literally a few
minutes to learn and of course a lifetime to master
like any good coaching model.
So the GROW model originated from a book called
Coaching for Performance by John Whitmore.
It’s an excellent book. I think it’s in something like
the 5th or 6th edition now and well worth a read
around the whole coaching subject of
coaching at work.
And the GROW stands for
G is Goal in terms of the goal...

What if I don't like my coach?

coaching Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

When you’re getting into a professional relationship
with a coach one thing you might be wondering
what if I just don’t like them?
What if I don’t get on with them?
And that’s an interesting question
because if coaching isn’t working for you
then you will tend to focus on things
like that. The coach has some irritating habits…
I’m not quite sure if this is the right coach for me…
When coaching is working really well that’s
probably the last thing you think about
because the focus is on you
what you want to talk about.
The values you’re working on,
the changes you’re putting into place,
and reflecting on those changes
and making sense of them.
So if liking your coach is an issue for the
coach you currently have then it’s probably worth
reflecting on the whole coaching process
and whether it’s working for you.
If you’re worried about liking the coach before
taking the coach on, don’t...

I'm an introvert and I'm not sure coaching will work for me

coaching introversion Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

Ok, so you may consider yourself to be a bit
of an introvert and maybe wondering whether
coaching would actually work for you.
You know, spending one-to-one time talking
to someone may not normally be your preferred
way of working or thinking things through.
I will say that a good coach will adjust
their style to what you need.
So, if I'm coaching someone who is
very introverted for example then I make sure
they have plenty of time to reflect
and think about the questions I'm asking.
Also some adjustments I might make as well is,
knowing if someone is very reflective
and like to think things through
in their own time,
is actually have shorter coaching
sessions and more regularly.
So rather than say have an hours
coaching session I might make it
half an hour every week rather than
say an hour every two weeks.
Just to make sure that that
reflection time is built in.
So coaching work can absolutely
and definitely work for everybody
but you may, as the coachee,
you may need to express that,
being...

Big or small change?

change Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

So obviously in coaching you want
some kind of change.
But what's better to focus on?
Making a small change or making a large change?
That might be a peculiar kind of question but
you'll find that some coaches or some
schools of thought talk about aiming for big,
audacious, enormous, huge goals and having those
as part of your life
and direction in which you're going.
The reality is, how we make change is by small steps.
So I often find that one of the most
powerful questions I can ask the coachee is
"What's the smallest change that you could make
to move you in the direction of where you're going?"
And invariably what happens is that person
comes up with something really small that
they can do, that they are very willing
to commit to, make happen.
Almost tomorrow in a lot of cases.
And what happens is they go away,
make that small change and then realise
'if I can do that, I can do something bigger,
and actually if I can do that then
I can do something even bigger still'.
So small change...

Can I coach my partner?

coach relationships Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

So let's say you're getting into coaching,
you've learnt some coaching skills,
perhaps you've done a few courses,
perhaps you've been practising with
a few colleagues and things like that.
And then the possibility of,
your partner perhaps says,
"this sounds like a good thing
this coaching, why don't
you try it out on me?"
The question arises,
can you coach your partner?
Now, the answer to that is yes
you can but I would be cautious.
If the coaching issue is about something
to do with the relationship between
the two of you, you're both involved
in some way, even for the best coaches
it's very difficult to separate
yourself completely outside
of that and purely coach.
One trick I would say when you're
working with your partner
to help solve a problem,
deal with an issue, or something like that,
is give them three choices
or ask which of the three methods
you'd like when they come to you.
Do you want me to just listen
to the issue so you can just
talk it out as extroverts
need to do for example,
...

How do I know when to stop coaching?

coaching Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

So you're getting coaching and everything
is going well. You've achieved a certain
number of performance improvements.
You've focused on all that sort of thing
and you maybe wondering
when do I stop this coaching?
When do I get to a point where I say
to the coach, ok I think I've had
enough sessions for now?
Well one thing I would say is a good
coach will flag that up way in advance.
Because normally when a coach takes
on a client there's normally one
or two key issues that the coach
has agreed that they are
going to work with,
with the particular client
and what typically happens,
from my experience, is you deal
with those one or two issues,
maybe a number of side issues
associated with the particular topic,
but within say three or four sessions
you've cracked the major things,
the side issues, and you may have agreed
some kind of follow-up
session to go on with.
Typically you'll know, you'll know
when you're done and a good coach
will flag that up too.
And they'll say is there anything
else...

How do I ask my boss for coaching?

coaching Apr 04, 2022

Video transcript:

So one thing you might be wondering
is how do I ask my boss for coaching?
Because obviously it's going to be
your boss that signs off, for example,
a professional, external coach to come in.
Now there's a very obvious answer
for this is
you don't ask your boss for coaching.
You ask you boss to help with a
particular performance issue or
particularly development need.
That's the focus you put on it
and you say this is where
my performance is right now
and this is where you and I agree
it could go with some assistance
so that's our aim.
And my preferred way of doing
that is coaching,
but focus on the benefit,
focus on the performance
that you're trying to achieve,
not on the method of choosing.
It's just you to decide coaching
would be one of the most effective
ways to do that.
So, don't ask your boss for coaching,
Ask you boss for help to achieve
a certain performance and coaching
is your preferred tool for doing that.
Agree? Disagree?
Let me know in the comments below.
