How do I ask my boss for coaching?

So one thing you might be wondering
is how do I ask my boss for coaching?
Because obviously it's going to be
your boss that signs off, for example,
a professional, external coach to come in.
Now there's a very obvious answer
for this is
you don't ask your boss for coaching.
You ask you boss to help with a
particular performance issue or
particularly development need.
That's the focus you put on it
and you say this is where
my performance is right now
and this is where you and I agree
it could go with some assistance
so that's our aim.
And my preferred way of doing
that is coaching,
but focus on the benefit,
focus on the performance
that you're trying to achieve,
not on the method of choosing.
It's just you to decide coaching
would be one of the most effective
ways to do that.
So, don't ask your boss for coaching,
Ask you boss for help to achieve
a certain performance and coaching
is your preferred tool for doing that.
